The ideas we embrace today will define our world tomorrow.

Ideas form our everyday existence. From the way we interact with our loved ones to our professional aspirations; how we measure our self worth to the value we place on scientific discovery; how we choose to spend our money to how we choose to spend our time; we navigate the world based on the ideas we encounter. Our society is based on the values and relationships of its citizens, and, in this way, the ideas that we experience are a driving force in shaping our communities.

TEDxABQ 2017 is about confronting one question above all others: What is the future that we want to create? For ourselves, our children, and our communities, it is imperative that we take an active role in shaping the world into what we want it to be, not the world it might become.

Where do our actions begin? With the ideas we encounter–and, eventually, with the ideas we embrace and make our own.

The future of the electrical grid

The future of the electrical grid

Imagine a long term major failure of the electricity grid in New Mexico. No electricity, heat, running water, sewage, traffic control, or  food for days…or even weeks! If communities, utilities, and government cooperate, we can combine new technology, fast arriving, with existing power distribution infrastructure to build a more resilient system.

Andrea Mammoli, professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Mexico and director of the Center for Emerging Energy Technologies, is developing some of the world’s most advanced energy grid technology and changing the way the world gets and stores energy.

Farming dinosaurs in Northern NM

Farming dinosaurs in Northern NM

Living dinosaurs—or ostriches—compete for the greatest immune system, best steak-producing animal, best plumage, and best leather. They produce the largest eggs and are the biggest bird on earth. Why raise anything else when you can raise ostrich?

Andrea Romero has an obsession for fundamentals, raising ostriches in the high desert of New Mexico to help bring sustainable meat proteins to the market, fighting climate change from factory farmed meat, and finding a food-secure future.

What keeps you up at night?

What keeps you up at night?

Most insomniacs imagine stress, an overactive mind, or a genetic background as a cause for this vexing sleep loss. In actuality, disruption in breathing is a major and likely primary cause for why people wake up at night.

Dr. Barry Krakow is one of the world’s leaders in sleep medicine and has spent the last two decades learning how we do–and don’t–sleep. He is a clinical specialist and sleep researcher, studying and treating chronic nightmare and insomnia patients at his sleep medical center, Maimonides Sleep Arts & Sciences and his sleep research facility, Sleep & Human Health Institute.

How can we make space more accessible?

How can we make space more accessible?

Several times each month, a rocket is launched to orbit somewhere from Planet Earth. In this era of frequent orbital launches, are suborbital launches–those which go up and immediately return to earth–still relevant? Dr. Bill Gutman believes so and, in fact, he sees the suborbital launch business poised for explosive growth due to new technology and suborbital space tourism.

Dr. Bill Gutman has been the Director of Aerospace Operations of Spaceport America since October 2009. His major responsibilities are to oversee launches and flight safety and to assist customers as they bring their programs to the spaceport.

If you could predict future crime, would you do it?

If you could predict future crime, would you do it?

Cutting-edge research forces us to confront uneasy questions about the proper role of emerging “neuro-prediction” technologies. This research has the potential to inform decisions to punish, release, and rehabilitate criminal offenders on the basis of scientific evidence about their individual risk.

Dr. Eyal Aharoni is a cognitive scientist best known for his research and scholarship on the human brain’s contribution to our understanding of impulsive, antisocial behavior. He is currently a Professor of Psychology, Philosophy, and Neuroscience at Georgia State University. His research is made possible in part by the New Mexico Corrections Department and its incarcerated population, by the MacArthur Foundation, and by the Mind Research Network and its collaborators.

What is the intersection of health and education equity?

What is the intersection of health and education equity?

Schools and institutions are central ecosystems that can encourage innovation using Indigenous ways of knowing to learn and share. Through his work to help improve health and health equity, Henry Jake Foreman will weave stories on ways he is bridging the gap between diverse institutions, businesses and educators to positively impact the social determinants that impact our health such as where we eat, sleep, work, and play.

Henry Jake Foreman has a diverse cultural, educational, and epistemological background, which are the foundation for his work in bridging worlds and promoting harmony and consciousness through Indigenous education.

Mindfulness–at work, in the military, and at home

Mindfulness–at work, in the military, and at home

We all want to perform at our best in every facet of our lives. Each of us strives to achieve professional success without sacrificing ourselves, specifically our health and relationships, along the way. The reality of this is much more difficult.

Dr. Jannell MacAulay specializes in performance under stress and creating mindful leaders who thrive in their workspace and lifespace. She is a USAF Lieutenant Colonel, the Director of Human Performance and Leadership for the 58th Special Operations Wing, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, and an Air Force Profession of Arms Center of Excellence instructor.

Performances that transport you around the world

Performances that transport you around the world

Can you really learn and understand another person’s story through the performing arts? People are often searching for the tools they need to interpret the world around them. Experiencing the performing arts from another culture humanizes world events, politics, and people.

Juli Hendren has a deep passion for cultural exchange and understanding through the performing arts. She is a founding member and the Artistic Director of Tricklock Company, a devised theatre ensemble based in Albuquerque, with a focus on international touring. She is also the Curator of The Revolutions International Theatre Festival, an international festival founded in 2001 which produces performances, workshops, and cultural exchange events in New Mexico.

How can we stop wildlife extinctions?

How can we stop wildlife extinctions?

It is estimated that by 2050, 30% of the world’s biodiversity may be extinct. Is it possible for us to give back to biodiversity even after large scale development projects? Explore how a paradigm shift could reverse climate change trends and slow the loss of biodiversity.

Dr. Kina Murphy has always had a love for the wilderness. Today, her work is focused on how to increase biodiversity in areas that have been heavily impacted by resource extraction.

How the little things connect us

How the little things connect us

What makes a poem relatable? By examining how we have been conditioned to judge our personal stories as insignificant, poet Olivia Gatwood brings to light the value in the seemingly mundane, and its potential to connect us to thousands.

Olivia Gatwood firmly believes in girl power, specifically that of teen girls, and has spent the majority of her career working to create spaces where young women feel validated, represented, and empowered to exercise their voices.

Folding one million paper cranes for peace

Folding one million paper cranes for peace

Fear tends to stop people from pursuing their passions, even the smallest ones. All it takes is one step, one conversation, to embark on an adventure. One book inspired one project to take one million paper cranes to the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan.

Rick Allred, photographer, is passionate about growing as a human being and encourages others to explore and discover their humanity as a means to creating a life they love. In 2017, he took that first step by creating the project “In the Folds of Peace” to start new conversations and take 1 million paper cranes to Hiroshima, Japan.

The future of wearable technology

The future of wearable technology

With the advent of wearable technologies, a new healthcare model is on the horizon. The ability to continuously monitor a range of relevant physiological conditions throughout a person’s normal routine will allow unprecedented medical information to be collected, saving time and money, assisting healthcare specialists, and improving quality of life.

Dr. Ronen Polsky recently began a program using microneedles for the transdermal sensing of physiological markers for human performance testing and,  in collaboration with the University of New Mexico Medical School, is performing clinical trials for this technology.

How your genes impact the way your body uses medicine

How your genes impact the way your body uses medicine

Pharmacogenomic testing is used to predict how a patient will metabolize, or breakdown, medications based on their unique genetic profile. The goal is to save time and money,  reduce side effects, and decrease visits to the doctor’s office. As it becomes more accessible, it’s clear that the future of prescription medicine is in pharmacogenomic testing.

Dr. Tuesdy Horner, a licensed pharmacist clinician, and residency-trained Doctor of Pharmacy, believes less medication is best. She is President of Southwest Pharmacy Consulting and Clinical Instructor at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her work includes Inpatient Clinical Pharmacy at Presbyterian Hospital where she serves as a preceptor, and guest lecturer for the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy.

Share science, not silence

Share science, not silence

In the U.S., people overwhelmingly view science positively, yet there appears to be a disconnect between that perception and public support for science. This divide has real consequences in science policy and decisions that affect everyone. Let’s have a better conversation about strengthening the role of science in society to improve how science serves our communities. It starts by sharing science, not silence.

Valorie Aquino is an anthropological archaeologist who contributes original research on human-environment interactions. In 2017, she found herself on the frontlines of science advocacy as a national co-chair of the March for Science, which created the largest known global event for science that drew more than 1.1 million people worldwide on April 22.

Performers

The Performers

Revozo

Revozo

Revozo draws upon Flamenco puro tradition and combines them with elements of dance music from other cultures, including Cuban Rumba and Mexican Cumbia. The result is a magnetically danceable musical offering that is unabashedly modern yet stays true to its cultural roots.

Internationally renowned vocalist Vicente Griego has performed on stages throughout the world, collaborating with the most respected Flamenco artists of our time. A Northern New Mexico native, Griego brought together an astonishing lineup of New Mexico musicians to form Revozo: Ricardo Anglada and Mario Gebres on guitars, James Whiton on upright bass, each with a lifetime of experience and critical acclaim spanning a myriad of different genres.

Round Mountain

Round Mountain

Named for a place in the Pecos Wilderness they explored as children, Round Mountain was founded by Santa Fe brothers Robby and Char Rothschild in 2002. Joined by Nick Kunz on percussion, they play instruments from many cultures to bring original music that is founded in family and at home in the world. Having toured nationally between 2007 – 2013, they have now chosen to place their priority on a connectedness to the spirit of music, and on a non-nomadic lifestyle that honors their roles as fathers, husbands, sons, and members of a community – servicing pianos and teaching music.

Round Mountain’s performance will feature two songs expressing a hope for humanity to raise our game toward future harmony.

Phoenix Avalon

Phoenix Avalon

History happens – philosophers name it, artists reflect it, people feel it. Violinist Phoenix Avalon will show how classical musicians reflect the essential dilemmas of the time directly to the audience through the experience of their music. He also poses the question– what is the essential philosophical question of the 21st century?

Phoenix Avalon was born passionate about music, and at age 1 1/2, he found his true love – the violin. Seemingly on a quest, he advanced from Santa Fe Talent Education at 3 to studying with Itzhak Perlman this summer at Perlman Music Program. He has studied with Carmelo de los Santos, Jan Mark Sloman, and Jamie Laredo. He has soloed with Arapahoe Philharmonic, Cleveland POPS Orchestra, Boulder Symphony, NM Philharmonic, Performance Santa Fe, and has been heard on national radio shows From the Top and Performance Today. Phoenix plays a Guadagnini violin, c. 1786, generously loaned by Kenneth Warren & Son Ltd. He is currently 16 years old.
